“Okay, I think we need a plan,” said Joe, his eyes still twinkling in the wake of their very personal discoveries as he zipped himself back up and helped Evie into her undies and jeans, kissing every inch of her bare skin all over again, reigniting her cravings instantly. But they couldn’t stay here all night. They needed to make some decisions, so she rolled over to the reclined seat opposite him and propped her head up with her elbow, listening intently. “I haven’t sorted anywhere to bunk tonight and I’m guessing accommodation in the town might not be easy to come by. But before we drive back that way and do the rounds of the scant few hotels and B&Bs - not that I’m getting ahead of myself in the other kind of B department.” Joe arched his brow and the ghost of a smile played across his lips… And oh, those lips. Evie couldn’t wait to experience everything about them again. “I need to give you that long overdue explanation.”

“Rio told me what happened,” said Evie, not wanting to make things painful for Joe. “It’s okay if you’d rather not go back over everything. I understand. It’s a conversation that can keep until you’re ready.”

“Well, it’s all to do with my sister, as you know,” said Joe with a sad sigh. “Sure, I want to talk about her. But then we will get straight back to the subject of us. She’s been trying to sort my love life out for ages. She will adore you, Evie Evans.”

A surge of emotions spiralled through Evie’s body then. Sadness that she probably wouldn’t be getting to meet Joe’s sibling anytime soon, tinged with the excitement of him making it so clear he saw them as a couple with a future. Then again, it wasn’t the first time he had done that, and Evie made a mental note to ask him about the photo he’d taken of them last month when they were all dressed up – as well as quizzing him on how he knew her last name.

“By the time you went to the bathroom that night, I was smitten. I’m sure you’ve heard more romantic declarations, but I could tell there was something special brewing between us and I didn’t want to let you go. I knew that our connection ran much deeper than surface attraction. People from the town down the road might even say that we signed soul contracts before we incarnated.”

Evie shook her head and let out a little puff of laughter, though who was she to dismiss such things, even if it did sound extremely woo-woo and very Glastonbury.

“I don’t think we’ve lost that feeling,” Joe smiled and inhaled deeply, as if recalling their last moment before everything went to shit, and now adding the series of movements they’d just seamlessly and steamily put together. Evie could have melted. They definitely hadn’t.

“My phone rang the literal second you disappeared from my sight. It was my dad. He never calls.
